The Pewsey Vale Vineyard was established at Eden Valley in 1847 producing some of Australia’s first cool climate wines.
Today we celebrate the noble variety and continue our mission; creating Rieslings of provenance from this single site.
To commemorate the 170th anniversary we released a small parcel of very special wine, from a block planted in 1961. Our 1961 Block Riesling is a new wine from old vines. This block is the dress circle of Pewsey Vale, situated in the centre of the vineyard amphitheatre on a gentle slope that faces due north and embraces the sun. Wild ferment overlays flavours of lemon myrtle and tea tree blossom, with seamless minerality. An ageless wine with youth and longevity.
"I've said it before, I'll say it again: you simply must have to have a few bottles of this wine (hey, a few cases if you can afford it and if you have room) in your cellar, wardrobe or kitchen cupboard. Yes, it's a big, well-known commercial brand and yes, it's widely available - often for closer to $16 than the full $20 - but it's also consistently delicious and reliably age-worthy. There's a more-ish lime juicy freshness when young which morphs into lime syrup toastiness with bottle age."
Eden Valley Riesling 2014 - Max Allen, Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine, Feb 2015
91 Points - "For 20 years or more I have been tasting and drinking this wine. As a benchmark for Australian riesling and a benchmark for pricing it's been wonderful. This vintage is no different. 91 now more to come as it ages..."
Eden Valley Riesling 2014 – Tony Keys, The Key Review of Wine, Jan 2015
"Summer dining usually means casual, no-fuss food, but that doesn't mean the summer table shouldn't have interesting wine on it. Traditional Australian riesling is a classic that develops fascinating complexity with age while retaining freshness - just the thing for summer, and its also good value. This five-year-old from South Australia's Eden Valley combines toasty development, apple and steely edge with enough depth to match richer dishes, yet enough acid backbone to keep it appetising."
The Contours Riesling 2009 - Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Sydney Morning Herald, Jan 2015
94 Points - "Put a case or two of this in your cellar and the rewards will far outstrip anything the share market might return over the next decade or two. A wine with a laser focus and fine fragrances - florals, talc, lemons and spices. A terrifically intense and beautifully elegant riesling. Delicious now, but with a long life ahead of it."
Eden Valley Riesling 2014 - Ken Gargett, Drinks Trade, Jan 2015
"Every Australian wine cellar should include a few bottles of this tucked away in a dark corner. Deliciously lime-juicy when young, it also ages superbly. The fact it's widely available and is often discounted to around $16 is a bonus."
Eden Valley Riesling 2014 – Max Allen, Australian Gourmet Traveller, Jan 2015
95 Points - "Continues the line of this distinguished wine. While the bouquet doesn’t say too much, the palate certainly does, with citrus, residual sugar and acidity like whirling dervishes, never coming to a stop. Drink to 2027."
Prima Riesling 2013 – James Halliday, James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2015
2014 CANBERRA Wine Show Pewsey Vale Vineyard Eden Valley Riesling 2014
95 Points - "A brilliant wine from a vineyard that consistently produces some of the finest riesling in the Barossa-Eden Valley region. Has a remarkable purity and expression of this variety with beautifully delicate flavours that build through to a very long finish."
Eden Valley Riesling 2014 - Ray Jordan, The West Australian, Nov 2014
